Police have made two major breakthroughs in the fight against the ilk-gal harvesting of perlemoen when they found 500kg in Turffontein and also 860kg at the Johannesburg International Airport in the last 24 hours.In the first case, a man was arrested after the perlemoen was discovered on private premises in Turffontein yesterday.The perlemoen seized at the airport had been brought from the Cap~ to be exported to I-long Kong.As yet, no one has been arrested in connection with this case.The police made one arrest and are looking for another person involved in the bust. A 4x4 vehicle was also confiscated by the officers.The perlemoen has been brought to Pretoria for investigation by the Endangered Species Prntection Unit. Members of the Westem Cape province?s Marine Coastal Unit and Captain Mario Scholtz, of the ESPU in Pretoria, were instrumental in preventing the freight being exported abroad. Capt Scholtz said that busts like these happened on a regular basis in South Africa.
